A paralysis tick has been found and confirmed on a pet in our local area. This is most likely due to the increased rain events making the conditions liveable for them currently. They most likely are coming here from Toowoomba areas via wildlife.
Please be diligent at giving your pets monthly flea and tick treatment on the day of the month required, a yearly injectable flea and tick needle is also available for easy administration and peace of mind. Tick treatments can take 72 hours to have high enough levels so daily tick checking is also suggested. This involves placing your fingers on your pets fur and stroking backwards
towards the head. Concentrating on the head especially ears and chin, but ticks can lodge anywhere on the body.
Signs of tick envenomation are difficulties walking or paralysis, weakness, vomiting, struggling to breathe or rapid breath rate, change in voice/bark/meow, just a bit not themselves may be the earliest sign.
Foals, calves and other small ruminants can be affected by paralysis ticks as well showing similar signs.
